Regular readers of my irregular offerings may remember the cottages I wrote about late last year. They were plain ornaments for burning or some mysterious other function. I, however, spotted their potential and the other day they came to the top of the to-do list.

I pondered on how to paint them: black Plastikote and then paint up from there? I decided to use the following scheme.

I decided the walls looked absolutely fine as they were. The seated figures at the front of each cottage were chiselled gently away.

The thatch was done with emulsion paints from tester pots: dark brown base and a lighter brown/yellow dry-brushed over it.

The chimney pots: Vallejo black base coat, dry brush grey then white. Once dry they were given an Army Painter wash.

The windows: Vallejo dark blue with a Vallejo pale blue highlight. I picked out the frames in a light grey.

The front doors were constructed from coffee stirrers and matchsticks. Painted with a wash of watered down Vallejo grey. Then a watered down Army Painter wash.

The figures and vehicle are from several manufacturers. Lighthouse Len is descended from a long line of lighthouse keepers. His belief in the power of light is so strong he carries a permanently lit lamp at all times. Sam isn't a sailor, he does like plenty of sodium chloride on his grub though. Len and Sam work here of course.

I've been working on this gang of state-sponsored n'er-do-wells for a while and finally, finally, finished them. Joy! So, what have we got then, Mr Tin? Well, what we have here is a group of Pulp German N*zis and one Italian F*scist. Four male figures and one female: Helga, She-Wolf of the EssEss.

The figures are all Bob Murch Pulp figures. There was one head swap: the Italian head from the Empress Miniatures drivers set onto Bartoletti. All painted with Vallejo colours and varnished with Vallejo matt which is my new favourite thing. The Egyptian statues are resin jobs picked up in charity shops.

I'm not going to batter on about how great DB was and his influence on popular music, style, and culture. Many others will do that both today and in the coming weeks. No, all I want to do is thank publicly DB for the effect he had on my life: that it is more than okay to be, according to 'normal' society, different, odd, unusual, weird. To not follow the crowd but to be true to yourself and do what makes you happy and not to do what is necessarily expected of you by 'normal' society. I have gone for the double figure idea once again: one in town clothes and one in adventuresome gear. They're a bit of an odd bunch and not all of them wear a hat. The figures are a mix of Copplestone, Bob Murch & Empress. Here they are:
The year started off promisingly enough, kinda tailed off a lot and then re-ignited at the end. Which was nice.

January
Ten posts. Two about a Mexican Revolution game and the rest were Pulps: figures and buildings.

February
Five posts. One post about my birthday the balance about Pulps.

March
Five posts. A book review; a trip to a wargames show; three Pulps including an actual game!

April
Nine posts. A trip to Salute; Pulps including The Lighthouse of Horror & new blog members.

May - November
Pretty much this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CUCLNPOjPZw

To be fair I did do some painting, modelling and wargaming during this period but the CBA was strong in me.

December
The return of The Mojo!

Six posts (including this one). Two about Iraqi forces in 1941; a book 'review' and two Pulps.

I'm glad I came back, the welcome has been 100% positive. Also flattered that my 81 followers stayed loyal during the hiatus plus views of the blog continued to go up despite lack of new content.
I'm really pleased I got these toys finished at all given the complete loss of wargamey mojo for most of 2015. Anyways they're done!

What we have here is The Old Instonians (St. Wilfreda's Institute For Girls) or, their preferred moniker, Sisters Before Misters. A sort of Pulp-era incarnation of Charlie's Angels without Charlie and much, much harder. Nails in fact. They don't hate men, they rather like them, they just don't need them to get things done.

I covered two of the SBM in an earlier post but now we see the whole gang assembled. Twice! I've gone down the route of producing two figures for each character. One is in normalish clothing that could be used about town. The second is in outdoors-adventuring kit.

The SBM comprises:
1. Blaze O'Halloran - Archaeologist & Adventurer
2. Phyl Martindel - Geologist & Adventurer
3. 'Red' Mary Quintile - Doctor & Adventurer
4. Wanda 'Wheels-Up' Williams - Pilot & Adventurer
5. 'Dead-Eye-Des' Desdemona Desmond - Scientist & Adventurer

The photos might make this a bit clearer.
It's the only wargaming/history based item I ws given as well. I'm not ungrateful, in fact the other stuff is fab it's just not wargamey.

This isn't a review, I got it only yesterday, merely my first impressions. It's hardback with dust jacket, 1st edition and 393 pages not including the bibliography and index. It's also very heavy. The book is divided into seven chapters starting in 1894 with the Sino-Japanese War and ending in 1949 with the Communist victory in the Chinese Civil War. Maybe there's Volume 2 on the way? The book appears to be full of illustrations: colour and BW. A quick flick through shows dozens of photographs I have never seen before. I have one other book by the author: Osprey's 'The Mexican Revolution 1910-1920' in which he makes a pretty good fist of explaining that kaleidoscopic war. I am very much looking forward to reading 'China's Wars 1894-1949' by Philip Jowett.
Yesterday I found this pair of resin buildings and at £3.99 each it would have been rude to say no. They are pretty heavy lumps and, I think, are some form of incense burner. Or something.

Anyway they are very well detailed: nice thatch, good door detail and leaded windows. They also scale perfectly with 28mm figures. I'm going to repaint them, well paint them, and add a door to the opening you can see in picture 1. Sadly there's no way to access the interiors but they are a valuable addition to my Pulp Universe. They will go well with The Lighthouse Of Horror should a suitable adventure ignite!
Today the noble footsloggers. They very much are leg infantry because despite being trained by the British the equipping only went so far. Thus they have no integral transport for the infantry, unlike their erstwhile trainers.

The typical Iraqi infantry division was modelled upon the British infantry of that period. So it has 3 brigades of infantry each of 3 battalions. 3 regiments of artillery with horse-drawn limbers. 1 squadron or regiment of cavalry which also fulfills a recce function. 1 horse-drawn LOG column and a motorised combined HQ, staff & signals unit.

The sources mentioned yesterday proved valuable again. Especially the Morval Earth site. The artillery is a ix of HAT WW1 German and Airfix RHA. HQ & LOG are diecasts. The cavalry is Zvezda Soviet cavalry with new heads. The infantry is HAT WW1 Turks straight from the box.
As you will remember I'm keen on the campaigns of the early part of WW2 and the one in Iraq fits the job description nicely. At first I was bereft of ideas on how to proceed. I knew it was going to be a Megablitz battle and that was it until I remembered my Grandfather has given me a copy of 'The Road Past Mandalay' by John Masters. In the book Masters details his involvement in the Iraq 1941 campaign. This was a good start.

I then purchased the Osprey campaign book 'Iraq 1941' by Robert Lyman. A good reference book; well illustrated with copious photographs, colour plates and maps. Spoilt in parts by Mr Lyman's rather confusing writing style and his anti-Iraqi bias. I feel a more even-handed editor could have eliminated some of the more glaring errors. I like the book a lot.

Finally I stumbled across this web page Morval Earth which is a fantastic resource for all manner of the esoteric including this huge section o Iraq 1941. Lots of fun, chock full of good gen. A real diamond of a web page.

I thought the siege of RAF Habbaniya was ideally suited to a small game: relief columns battling the desert and Iraqi defenders; RAF aircraft of various types defending and attacking; besieging Iraqi mechanized troops; aerial support from Fliegerfuhrer Irak. It's got it all. I already have sufficient figures and vehicles in the WDF boxes but had no Iraqis. I decided to created Iraqi 1st Mechanized Brigade and Iraqi 1st Infantry Division. The Iraqis had been trained and equipped by the British so their organisation follows that of their instructors.

So, for 1st Mech Bde I used HAT WW1 Turkish Infantry with some head swaps onto Revell 8th Army for the infantry. Trucks are all diecasts. The artillery is supposed to be 18lbrs but I used what I had which is HAT WW1 German Artillery. The Iraqi kit is described as olive green which I tried to recreate the colour on the vehicles and equipment followed by a heavy dry brushing with buff. The matt varnish added an unasked for further heavy dusting. Oh well, it is the desert after all. The photos aren't the best either!
As many of you know I'm a big fan of Swing Dance and the Big Band music that goes with it. Tonight a new dance class started in Sutton Coldfield. This is great because, at the moment, all teaching and most social dancing takes place in South Birmingham. I don't have a problem with this but I do feel that a city-wide Swing Dance scene in a place the size of Birmingham is a must. Tonight was definitely a step in the right direction to achieve this!

The teachers are called Paul Neary and Sarah McHugh and their dance school is called Swing Express. They taught us in a relaxed, friendly and accessible way. There were a number of absolute beginners in the class and they all seemed to get to grips with the moves and enjoy themselves at the same time. I felt the more experienced dancers also had a great time too.
The picture shows a typical Western Front battlefield except this time
it's medical. The players' job is to maneuver a stretcher bearer team,
with casualty, across the board to the Advanced Dressing Station. From
your right to your left in this picture. Great fun and very unusual
theme.
We reached the venue very quickly; we were chatting a lot and I believe this helps one warp time and space to one's advantage.

A monument to what once was

As usual the venue was right at the end of The Long March tunnel of Excel. This year, as well as the London Marathoners booking in there was some kind of clinical exhibition. There was also The Sherlock exhibition. This was overrun with fans, many of whom were sporting Deerstalkers. Apparently HE was there and it cost £50 to get a BC autograph. Or so I was told..

Anyways onto the main event. We got in very quickly and, as usual, the event space was like a furnace. I also thought that there were fewer traders there this year. Maybe not but that was the impression I got. That said the traders who were there were all doing good business; all were cheerful and friendly and the quality of the stuff on sale was high. Especially the MDF creations. Absolutely incredible and all at excellent prices.

I bought all the things I had on my shopping list. And several things that weren't. As you do ;-)

Saloot

Yes, that is an MDF steam launch in the style of The African Queen! I also bought an MDF saloon car which is an incredible model. Pictured LtoR Pulp figures (Swaggering Nazis and Helpless Captives). A load of movement trays; a Cthulhu pyramid; tents and camping stuff; the steam launch. I also took photos of some awe-inspiring games at Salute which will form another post.

All the best!

It's a novelty light, this is probably why it ended up in a charity shop. I picked it up, had a look, thought naaah and put it back on the shelf. Fortunately my friend was with me and he said 'What are you doing? That'll be great for your Pulp games!' He was right.

It had seen better days. I think it must have been thrown outside at some point given the amount of mud clogging the battery compartment. I cleaned it up, and drained off the rain water that had gotten inside. After a soapy wash and rinse it didn't look too bad. Sadly the battery compartment had been damaged beyond economical repair so no light action.

I masked off the main light panels and the windows. I then sprayed it matt black overall. Once that was dry I got the white emulsion tester pots out and started painting. I tried to avoid completely filling in the gaps between the building stones. Mostly successful, I wanted to suggest a building that is slightly seedy and not quite what it seems. I painted the roof, front door and railing with Vallejo Red 70926 and then highlighted with Vallejo Red 70947. The windows I painted with a very watery Vallejo 70947 to get a 'House That Dripped Blood' vibe going. Sort of.

The rock base was dry brushed with a grey emulsion and then a lighter grey Vallejo London Grey mixed with a bit of white. The marine plants were painted with a variety of Vallejo Greens and then highlighted with Vallejo Yellow. I dry-brushed my way through this to maintain the black undercoat in the fronds and recessed areas of the plants. I also stippled the base with various greens to suggest sea plant growth.
The steps were dry brushed white, then grey then stippled with greens to suggest marine growths as per the rest of the rock.
So what's the plan? Well, a team of right-thinking do-gooders will almost certainly investigate this place before too long. What will they discover there? Cultists performing their foul rites? Captives held in durance vile? Who knows but I'm certain we'll find out!

UATH!

Update 1: I managed to remove the battery compartment gubbins without damaging the model! Following a test with a tea-light (it was a brief test) the lights will be back on. Maybe one of those flickering flame ones people use on wargames tables inside black cotton wool to suggest burning.

Update 2: I decided the building's paint job looked too fresh and new. To calm it down, and up the seedy, I used a large brush to apply generously watered down Army Painter Dark Tone over the white. I also glued some bunches of moss to the building to imply lack of maintenance.

Dedicated to the overthrow of humanity and the reign of A Dreadful Being From Another Dimension. They are completely bonkers. There is, however, one thing they have that keeps them strong. They are a group of five figures all standing in neutral poses but all are individuals. Some are dressed in general day wear others are for a night out. Being a bit rubbish at this sort of thing I decided to stick to a simple palette with each figure being painted in just two main colours. I've also included a sinister male figure to add some balance to the scene.

None of them are part of a faction or gang being instead Expendable Extras. They'll also help to flesh out games by being innocent bystanders. And, as we all know, that usually means being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
They are, however, the deadliest machine-gunners available for hire just about anywhere. Our machine-gunners have all seen active service on a number of fronts and are all from different parts of the world. Fitted out with surplus Great War equipment and weaponry and clothed in an all-purpose uniform designed by the good Kapitan himself. If your price is right they will machine-gun your cause to victory with the minimum of fuss. Collateral damage is a speciality unless otherwise requested.

The figures, I think, are all Perry Great War miniatures. I've had them for years and decided to re-paint them in a more Pulp style. As they are they can take part in adventures just about anywhere in the world.
We used the rules Richard Lloyd provided in WSS Magazine a while ago. They fit on a postcard; use playing cards to decide initiative; use D6s; are super simple and above all are free!

General Charles took command of the safari while I ran the jungle horror. The plan for the safari was to make its way from the dock area, obtain The Item Of Great Value, survive and return to the dock area. Simple.

The Safari comprised five members:
1. Brad Sterling - Heroic Leader
2. 'Red' Mary Quintile - More Than Capable
3. Professor Septimus Quintile - Seeker of The Item Of Great Value
4. Tank Randlethrust - Big Game Hunter & Expendable Extra
5. Noble Spunkmeier - Dilettante & Expendable Extra

The Jungle Horrors include:
1. Pool of Certain Death
2. Dinosaurs
3. Angry tribesmen

Here we see The Film Crew capturing images of the safari's ship SS Venture and the squalor that is the Tarbooshian controlled outpost of Puerto Sucio.

The safari has set off through the gap between the two large, and impassable, hills. Known locally as El Paso De La Muerte Segura. In the far distance the group has attempted to cross a water course. Their movement has attracted a voracious T-Rex which is attacking them. The Film Crew shot it all.

Close-up of the water-hole fight. The heroes poured a fusillade of shots into the rampaging saurian. Which failed to stop its charge. The dino got into teeth-gnashing range and inflicted some hits on the party. The safari responded with even more bullets and down went the smashed and thrashing beast. PHEW!

The safari made more careful progress after the dino encounter and reached the statue without further incident, although they nearly stumbled into The Pool Of Certain Death (it's the funny looking thing between the statue and the green jungle piece). They were required to spend two turns at the statue to simulate their search for TIOGV (which they found). But look carefully. Is that a group of angry tribesmen in the bush there?

Of course it is. They can see the thieves at the statue and they aim to stop them and return TIOGV to its rightful place.

Battle in the bush! The tribesmen have let fly with a volley of arrows at our intrepid heroes. They take some hits but not enough to stop them blasting one of the tribesmen to death and mortally wounding one more. This breaks the morale of the locals....

....who flee for their lives. They hurtle away from the guns of the robbers but also away from the dinosaur that has been attracted by the noise. And this with the party of heroes so close to fortune and glory! The monster has blocked the entrance to the Pass of Certain Death. As you do.

For about the first time in the game the saurian won the initiative and charged the safari. Hand-to-claw-to-teeth combat saw two of the party, Tank & Noble, go down in gouts of blood and guts as the angry dino lashed and gnashed about. Was this the end for our brave adventurers so close to safety?

Of course not. Brad and Mary give the monster the good news and knock it flat. We can see poor Tank and Noble down in the dirt.

The survivors return in triumph with TIOGV! Thankfully the main characters survived and the Expendable Extras did their job magnificently.

A really enjoyable game during which we had frequent breaks for coffee and pastries, lunch, then more coffee. The General said we must play another game in another Pulp location soon!

In this book Singleton examines the role of the
Royalist general the Marquess of Montrose in the British Civil War
during 1644-1645. The author argues convincingly that this army, rather
than being one that comprised
only Scots Highlanders, was composed of
well-trained, skilfully led and highly motivated troops. Troops who
were, above all, professional. He shows that Montrose's army used the
latest battlefield techniques which gave it success after success. The
myth of Highland charges carrying all before them in bloody rout is
turned upon its head completely.

That the Covenanting armies set
against him were not of the highest quality is not the fault of
Montrose. In a series of battle descriptions the author shows that time and time again professional troops triumph over amateurs. This is not to say the
Covenanting troops were all duds. Their best trained and led men were
fighting in England at the time. In fact Scots troops, specifically
lancers, brought about the Royalist collapse at Marston Moor battle.

The
book also contains a number of colour plates. These are uniformly
excellent and include several photographs of present day interpreters
clad in authentic costumes.I felt these photographs were the highlight
in a book that is excellent throughout. The appendix is a fascinating
collection of first-hand accounts of the battles of Tippermuir,
Aberdeen, Auldearn, Inverlochy. The first-hand accounts conclude with a
description of Montrose's final defeat at Kilsyth. A defeat brought
about by a lack of Royalist regulars versus large numbers of
professional Covenanting troops returned from England.

In
conclusion I enjoyed reading this book immensely. The author proves his
case that professional, disciplined troops made up the bulk of
Montrose's army and that the Scots Highlanders, despite the national
myth, were useful only in the pursuit of an already smashed enemy.
In the second shot we can see some of the products and people. Spices, fruit and vegetables. And a chicken. You may recognise the two ladies haggling for the chicken. (I also found out I can't paint chickens. Feathers are hard)

The third shot shows a frank exchange of views taking place between a bearded gentleman and a market trader. My guess is he wants one of those fine brass pots at a good price. The pistol and the onlooking police officer ensures fair trading for all. Off to the left we can see a trader trying to flog some cloth to an unconvinced woman. Who is that lurking in the background?

The final picture is along the front of the market.

All of the market stuff I scratch-built from odds and ends.

The cloth is paper which I painted with white glue; allowed to dry; painted; dried; loosely rolled.

The brass pots are all gold coloured beads and sequins.

The spices are in those square size things you get on hangers in clothes shops. I painted them to resemble wooden crates and then inserted some pieces of white glue covered brown paper in to get a heavy cloth look.

The spices themselves are pieces of thick card bent into a V-shape and then coated with white glue and sand. Once dry they were painted and then glued in place.

The fruit and vegetables are all beads. Painted with a white glue and colour mix.

The large pottery vessels are wooden beads with a smaller plate-shaped sequin glued on top. Painted a pottery brown and with coloured beads glued on top.

The little truck with the barrel is scratch-built apart from the wheels (off a 1/72 scale A/T gun) and the barrel (Renedra).

The Police Pavilion is entirely scratch-built. The columns were cut from balsa pole and the roof is a framework of coffee stirrers. The wooden sections were fixed together with white glue. I strengthened all the joins with dressmakers pins in pre-drilled holes. The cloth cover is a piece of striped cotton cut to size and glued in place. I made sure that the uprights were high enough for figures to pass underneath without any bother. For such a simple construction it does look very sinister.

The figures are a mix of Copplestone, Bob Murch and Eureka.

We went via breakfast at a local hostelry: yum! The show was a lot of fun and I bought some of the items on my shopping list. There was however a dearth of Pulp figures by any manufacturer present. A sharper-eyed-than-me reader will now inform me there were heaps of them. There were also a number of interesting and some quite beautifully presented games. The one I can remember was a depiction of part of The Great Siege of Malta 1565 which looked great. The Nice Man even gave me an info sheet describing the action.

I was taken particularly by the range of stuff that Ainsty Castings had on offer. I bought a box of 'Trade Goods': stacks of assorted barrels, bales of cloth, crates and giant oil/wine bottles in wicker baskets. I was also impressed by Sgts' Mess. Very friendly with a wide range of unusual, and therefore useful, 20mm WW2. If I re-start Megablitz they can expect my custom. They were also selling some laser cut kits for harbour quays; I bought a nice landing stage and some trash cans. Bottled paint was also going at a nice price if you shopped around.

The only downside of the afternoon was a significant minority of unwashed, smelly
bodies at the event. How hard is it to wash or bathe or shower oneself and wear clean clothes before going
out in public? I guess they stood out because the majority of attendees did not stink.

The afternoon was brought to a premature end for the General and I by a REAL fire alarm and evacuation. Wargamers are a cool and orderly bunch. They left the hall with minimal fuss and followed the staff's orders. Well done!

Luckily for me I'd bought all I was likely to and wanted to by this point so off we schlepped for a cup of tea and a chat back at the General's GHQ. Which is an apt description of the building let me tell you. The General then dropped me off at Wolverhampton Train Station and I was back home in Brum regarding my loot an hour later. A very enjoyable day!

All the best!

*Not in Alumwell (Walsall) it's in Wolverhampton these days. And actually easier to get to by bus and car.
You knew they'd pitch up eventually. It's inevitable really. This latest batch of metallic toy heroes are from Bob Murch - The Istanbul Constabulary set. Re-imagined in this case into The Tarbooshian Constabulary, pretty original I'm sure you will agree.I love this set, so many interesting figures; my favourite though is the chap sitting on the chair puffing on a hookah. The original set has 4 figures in it so I added the Peter Lorre look-a-like figure from the Sinister Spies set. He fits in very well.
